Long Rock inspired surface pattern design

During December we visited Long Rock at Marazion, one of our local beaches and was surprised to see thousands of washed up fish as far as the eye could see. The Seagulls were having a field day!

This inspired me to illustrate and design a new surface pattern design as part of a larger collection of patterns I am currently working on. I always start all my design work in my sketchbook, something that was instilled in me at university. From there I take the initial sketchbook studies into Adobe Illustrator to work on and to create a repeat design. I have just started using Adobe Capture which is a great way to get drawings quickly into Illustrator. I use my Wacom tablet to clean up the illustrations adding or removing parts until I am happy with the motif. After this I start to create the surface pattern.

I love drawing from nature especially flowers, plants, sea life, birds etc. Where we live we are surrounded by so much inspiration and I am out everyday with my sketchbook in hand.

At Whittle Design Studio we can produce standalone illustrations and surface pattern designs. If you would like more information or would like to commission an illustration please get in touch or email Sarah direct at sarah@whittledesignstudio.com
